Final Blog Post for the Myth
Hey Jam Damp here, what you have all been waiting for. The ultimate post. It is finally here. You guys might conclude that the Greeks having myths is ridiculous, but if you think about it every religion has there own myths, even if they are not called myths. Such as the story of Moses freeing the Hebrews from Egypt. That is a story from a religion whether you believe in it or not.
The myth I am going to tell you about was believed by many people, so even if you do not accept the facts as true, please do not hate on it, keep an open mind. As you know this is going to be about the history behind Kronos and the famous myth when he eats his children. But first some background on Kronos. Even though Kronos' Dad was the ruler of the universe, Kronos was still greedy for power. Kronos made some serious steps and actually castrated his Dad, and then took his Dad's place on the thrown. Kronos knew that one of his sons or daughters was going to be more powerful than him so he was paranoid that one of his children would do the same to him that he did to his Dad. This paranoia drove him to eat his own children. His wife, Rhea, was very unhappy that he did this so she resorted to wrapping up a stone in a towel and giving it to Kronos. Kronos believed this was one of his babies. Rhea sent the real baby away to an island where he was safe and was able to grow up free from the wrath of Kronos. This baby was Zeus. Kronos eat the stone thinking it was a baby. Some people believe that after ingesting the stone Kronos threw up and the other babies came out with vomit and escaped.
It was the island of Crete that Rhea sent Zeus to. Zeus' carers were goats. Whenever he cried his goats would bang together pots and pans to make sure that his evil Dad would never get to hear his baby's cry, and seek him out to eat him. Zeus grew up to be brave and strong. When he became a teenager he left Crete to search for his father, with a special potion. This nasty potion included wine and mustard. Imagine drinking that! Zeus found his father and told him to drink the potion. Kronos did not recognize Zeus because he believed that he had eaten him and was already dead. Greek Mythology also theorizes that it was when Kronos drank the potion that he threw up and his children were freed.
Following these events, the Titan War started. After many years of fighting and fatalities the gods conquered and ended up on top. Following the war Zeus chopped Kronos into one million pieces and threw him into Tartarus, in the underworld. Zeus, Hades and Poseidon were able to chose what part of the world they wanted to rule and control. Zeus ruled the sky, Poseidon the ocean, and Hades was left with fire and the underworld. They basically picked names out of a hat to see who would take Kronos' place.
There are many theories on how Kronos died. What I learned during my studies was very surprising. Kronos is immortal so never actually died, but instead was cut in to one million pieces and banished to Tartarus along with the other Titans. Hades guarded Tartarus to make sure they did not escape. The Gods were called the Olympians and lived on mount Olympus. I believe this myth was significant to the Greeks because they worshipped the gods. This myth explains how the gods came to power and created the world that they lived in. It is also significant because the Gods saved the Greeks from Kronos and the Titans.

The Greeks have hundreds of myths. It is their way of telling their stories. This is a myth that I had heard about before starting this blog. I have many friends that love Greek mythology, so when I was assigned this project I was excited to learn more. I thought, why not learn about a myth? After all myths give us the easiest insights in to Greek religion. I want to thank all of you who have followed me throughout these posts. Please dont worry, this may be my final Greek post, but there's more to come from Jam Damp. I hope you think the information that I provided was strong, informative and left you wanting to learn more about Greece. As I said, my blog does not end here though, stay tuned for my travels. I am heading to England this summer and will try to remember to post some pics and vids of my family there. I may also travel back in time and share some pictures and blogs from my travels to India the winter before last. Jam Damp, over and out.
